March 8th is International Women's Day – a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

Countering Misogyny: The Link Between Online Misogyny and Violent Extremism

The Influence and Decision-Making Action Hub is hosting its third Countering Misogyny webinar. This webinar will focus on the link between online misogyny and violent extremism, sharing findings from research done by Te Mana Whakaatu - Classification Office for the first time. 

The speakers are:

  • Caroline Flora, New Zealand’s Chief Censor who will present the Classification Office’s research
  • Caroline Cooney from the S. Department of State's Secretary's Office of Global Women's Issues who will bring a global perspective to tackling online misogyny
  • Eva Hartshorn-Sanders who is NCWNZ's own local expert on online harm and gender-based violence.

The panel includes Stephanie Rowe, Deputy Director-General Biodiversity, Heritage & Visitors at the Department of Conservation; Amanda Black, co-director of BioProtection Aotearoa; Trish Kirkland-Smith, Head of Nature Solutions & Partnerships at Fonterra; and Nicola Toki, the Chief Executive of Forest & Bird. Students will have the opportunity to participate in smaller, more intimate workshops led by influential women.

The Heretaunga Women's Centre celebrates International Women's Day annually with a movie and nibbles. All are welcome to attend. 

This year the Centre is thrilled with the permission of producer Nadia Maxwell to be screening two episodes from Shepherdess a specially commissioned for NZ television series. Even more exciting is one of the episodes Porangahau was filmed right here in the Bay! Shepherdess is an amazing dedication to the resourcefulness and depth of talent to the women of the land in Aotearoa. The women portrayed are all connected by a sense of place, and share their stories of courage, commitment and community. Explored in the episodes are their sense of self, their whānau, their community, and the landscape in which the women live.
