NCWNZ has been a comprehensive and independent voice for women since its inception in 1896. The organisation and its members have played a role in many significant achievements for gender equality over the years, starting with suffrage.
Today, over a century later, we have greater representation of women in Parliament and leadership positions, paid parental leave, legislative changes being made to reduce gender-based violence, and a significant increase in women obtaining education, among other things.
However, we are still not quite there yet and just as we reflect on our past and the numerous achievements of the organisation, we must also look towards our future and the actions we need to take to achieve gender equality in New Zealand.
NCWNZ is focused on reducing gender inequality as our contribution to building a happier, healthier and economically stronger country.
To achieve gender equality, we need to change the way we think and act around gender issues. We need to change our culture to remove the entrenched sexism underpinning many of the outcomes we see for women.
In our vision of a gender equal New Zealand, all people will have the freedom and opportunity to determine their own future. They will be free to develop their personalities and make choices without the limitations set by stereotypes, rigid gender roles and prejudices.
We are slowly progressing towards this vision thanks to a growing awareness of the issues and the action being taken by businesses, government, families, communities, individuals and the like.
We want to thank you for being part of this and for supporting NCWNZ in its work, whether this has been for the past 120 years or the past few months. Every little bit makes a difference.
Your support for the organisation and commitment to gender equality has driven us this far and we look forward to continuing on this journey with you. Thank you for everything you have done for NCWNZ.
We look forward to building a gender equal New Zealand alongside you.
Happy Founders’ Day.
