May 2009 - Waste Minimisation

A Discussion Document on the Waste Minimisation in New Zealand has been prepared by the Committee. The Ministry for the Environment was applauded for presenting a well set out document, and for the actions it had actually already taken, but the delay in implementing earlier legislation was deplored.

Target dates on proposed action were welcomed, and strong monitoring was recommended. A re-introduction of a refundable deposit on glass bottles was suggested. Actions such as the use of glass to create sand for a fake beach in a Christchurch Park were recommended.

In the summary, the general opinion of members was that there should be an emphasis on PREVENTION, i.e., waste reduction at the source. An annual Environment Report from businesses should be required. Other products that should be included as high priority were the following:

  • Packaging
  • Disposable nappies
  • Food waste
